Chandra observations of the recurrent nova CI Aql after its April 2000 outburst

چکیده
We report the results of two Chandra observations of the recurrent nova CI Aql at 14 and 16 months after its outburst in April 2000, respectively. The X-ray emission is faint in both cases, without any noticeable change in spectrum or intensity. Although the emission is very soft, it is not luminous enough to be due to late-time H-burning. This implies that the luminous supersoft phase ended even before the time predicted by the most recent calculations. The details of the X-ray spectrum, together with the fact that the observed X-ray intensity is brighter than pre-outburst (1992/1993), suggest that the observed X-ray emission is either due to ionization of the circumstellar material or due to the shocks within the wind and/or with the surrounding medium.

CI Aquilae: a recurrent nova with an unusually long plateau phase
We present the results of optical photometry of the recurrent nova CI Aql in later phase of the outburst which occurred in 2000. Our observation revealed that the object reached the quiescent level between 2001 December and 2002 April and therefore that CI Aql is a unique recurrent nova characterized by an extremely long (1.4–1.7 yr) plateau phase. The light curve obtained in the outburst sugge...
متن کاملPrediction of Supersoft X-ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, and Turn-off Time in Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae 2000 Outburst
Recurrent nova CI Aquilae is still bright 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. We predict the turn-off time of CI Aql 2000 outburst coming in August 2001 after a supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase lasts 250 days. We also predict helium enrichment of ejecta, He/H∼ 0.25 by number. Observational confirmations are urgently required. Based on the o...
متن کاملX-ray Observations of the Bright Old Nova V603 Aquilae
We report on our Chandra and RXTE observations of the bright old nova, V603 Aql, performed in 2001 April, supplemented by our analysis of archival X-ray data on this object. We find that the RXTE data are contaminated by the Galactic Ridge X-ray emission. After accounting for this effect, we find a high level of aperiodic variability in the RXTE data, at a level consistent with the uncontaminat...
متن کاملRevised Analysis of the Supersoft X-ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, and Turn-off Time in the 2000 Outburst of the Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae
Recurrent nova CI Aquilae has entered the final decline phase a bit before May of 2001, about 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. Based on the optically thick wind mass-loss theory of the thermonuclear runaway model, we have estimated the turnoff time of the CI Aql 2000 outburst. It is in late March of 2001 after a luminous supersoft X-ray so...
متن کاملModelling the Recurrent Nova CI Aql in Quiescence
We present detailed photometric investigations of the recurrent nova CI Aql. New data obtained after the 2000 outburst are used to derive a 3D geometrical model of the system. The resulting light curves clearly indicate the existence of an asymmetric spray around the accretion disk, as claimed in the past e.g. for the super-soft X-ray source CAL87 in the LMC. The simulated light curves give us ...
